Community Barangay Barangka Ilaya,

DRRM

DRRM SEMINAR

Disaster Risk Reduction Management is a requirement in our National Service Training Program in The University of Santo Tomas.

Last September 2016, we had our DRRM seminar in Tan Yan Kee building of UST. Our Administrator, Mr. Adrian Romero, opened the seminar.

We learned the basics of first aid, that we students may use in emergency cases.

Like the basics of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation or CPR. That there are instances around the university that a student may get attacked and in situations like these we know and we are prepared to respond to such emergencies.

Another skill we learned is the basics of Bandaging. We are prepared and we now know the proper technique in handling wounds and sprains.

One of the most important things that we should be aware of is our community. Our community's Threats and capabilities. We had an activity about what we think our community surrounded upon. This activity made me realize the hazards and the capacity of my community. It is good to be aware of the happenings in my community.

We ended the day learning more about the importance of safety, awareness, and responsiveness and what me may do to our community. DRRM seminar thought me the importance of awareness and preparedness as an individual.

COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE

I live in Mandaluyong City, under Barangay Barangka Ilaya. Our community is small and it is hard to find. To reach the Barangay Hall from my house, it would take a twenty minute walk; and , it is separated in the middle by the highway, EDSA.

During the community walk, it made me realize the hazards and capacity of my community.
These are the following capacities and hazards in my community

HAZARD/ VULNERABILITY

One of the biggest problem in  Metro Manila is the traffic, which ultimately means that there is air pollution spurring.  My address is somewhat the middle point of EDSA highway, which means almost all vehicles pass through this specific area everyday, including of which are the public buses. Public transportation is a good way to lessen gas emission, but some of these buses are smoke belchers which means dirtier air and the commuters are greatly affected by the black smog. Traffic should be solved upon quick, but lest forget the pollution in the air caused by these vehicles.

Another hazard in our community is the vulnerability of  fires. Details were not given to me about how these incidents happen; but, I was told, by the barangay officials, that fires do happen in our community. Rest assured, our community is always ready to respond in such incidents if ever they do happen.

PROJECTS:

Our community is greatly handled by our Barangay Captain, Lito C. Pangilinan, and of his and the council's action for the community is the proper disposal of trash. It sends a message that the community should always be prepared and ready to participate in the discipline of proper trash disposal. It is a great to know that the community knows how to maintain the cleanliness of the area and the people in our community have the discipline for cleanliness. Unfortunately, I was not able to see how the project goes during Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; but, one of the council members told me the information I needed to know about the activity.

The officials here are very participative when it comes to seminars that concerns the welfare of the  people in our community

  CAPACITIES:

My barangay is very well equipped with emergency situations,

There are a lot of competent authorities who are trained for emergency situations in our community who makes rounds around our community to make sure the community is safe.

Evacuation sites are very structured and the people in our community already know where to go if evacuation is necessary

Evacuation areas include the playground area, the amphitheater and the basketball court nearby the barangay hall

I was not able to document the Amphitheater, because there was an event on going and there are a lot of people.

DRRM OF BARANGAY BARANKA ILAYA

With permission, I was able to snap photos of the DRRM plan of our community. These are just some parts of the whole DRRM Plan Book of our community.

I have learned that our barangay is very competent when it comes to safety. The DRRM Plan Book of the Barangay was made back in 2015.

I would like to thank Ms. Amelita Valenzuela, Secretary of Barangay Barangka Ilaya for accommodating my inquiries.

I am very proud of community. the barangay officials are all accommodating; Also, they are very polite to the people in our community. I have seen smiles, laughter, and the occasional barangay events in our community. Safety should be the number one priority of everyone, and my community assures us that we are all safe. No one is safe when it comes to natural calamities, because they come unexpectedly; but, the officials here are thinking and preparing ahead in the event of these things happening. It is sigh of relief to know that the officials in our barangay are competent.

This experience helped me know more of my community and it makes me feel safer, knowing that emergency response is always on the go. It makes me proud to live in a place where safety is utmost importance, because that is what makes a home.

As a member of my community, and as a Filipino citizen, I will do my part to help and protect my countrymen. As an NSTP student, equipped with the knowledge of the importance of nation-building, I will do my part in helping my community, to make it safer, cleaner, and improve the livelihood of the community.  I will help and serve my community by immediately volunteering to help the people in the event of a disaster.

I will do my part in increasing the safety or capacity of our community by attending seminars that concerns the safety of my community. An example is reminding the community about the hazard of fire. March is not the only time to remind people of preventing fire, it should be all year round. I will do my best to help and serve the community I am living in.
